WHAT IS THE ‘GIVING THEM A REASON 2 WAIT’ (R2W) CAMPAIGN?
Since October 2011, Motivity has been collecting reasons as to why teens should wait to have sex. People just like you and I submit them every day through our website.
On September 15, 2012, we held our first R2W 5K Walk. The walk was a tremendous success. People traveled from miles around to support our efforts, with hundreds coming out to join us for this meaningful and powerful event. Collectively we walked a mile for every reason submitted.
WHY DID WE WALK?
There’s power in numbers!!! Youth are facing an onslaught of media images and discussions that says, “everybody else is doing it…..it’s just a matter of time before you will too.” ‘Waiting’ is not being propagated in their schools and certainly not in the popular television programs they’re drawn to. It’s no secret that our youth have a hard time navigating toward the most beneficial choices for their futures! THEY NEED MORE SUPPORT!
During the walk Motivity provided its participants with copies of the reasons and stories we’ve been collecting and then gave them some valuable material to take home with them. This walk demonstrated to our youth that there are many people who believe that they are worth the wait!
The walk may be over, but the R2W campaign reasons and stories continue to grow and will always be available for everyone to read on this website 24 hours, 7 days a week! Our website is meant to serve as a resource tool to help youth see for themselves the oftentimes negative consequences of choosing to have sex as a teen. We are helping them make better choices.
We need your help to continue to impact the youth of this generation. Won’t you share your story? Yours could be the very story that makes the difference in a young person’s life.
WHY SHARE YOUR STORY?
- Have you had an experience that will encourage a youth to wait to have sex?
- Did you make the decision to wait to have sex? We want to know why and how you did it!
- Did you have sex as a teen, but now wish you had waited?
There’s power in your story, both to help you and to help someone else from having to go through the same or a similar situation. The act of talking about your past in the right context can reduce stress and depression and help others at the same time. You will inspire, you will encourage, you will instruct, and sometimes even entertain. Take a moment to go back and think about what it was like to be a teen in the valley of decision. You may answer some questions for yourself and become better equipped to empathize with a young person in the same state as you were years ago.
