STARTLING FACTS FOR BIRTHS TO YOUNG WOMEN IN THE CITY OF DETROIT IN 2010:

Motivity R2W Teen Pregnancy 2* 2,418 teen births reported

* 2,127 were to African American girls

* In addition: Forty-one (41%) of all African American teen pregnancies end in abortion

*44 were to girls under age 14

* 875 were to girls between ages 15-17

* 1,502 were to girls between ages 18-19

How does TEEN PREGNANCY impact us individually? Our city? Our state? Our country? 

  • For the nation overall, teen childbearing costs taxpayers $10.9 billion annually
  • 80% of unmarried teen mothers end up on welfare (at least 1,934 based upon 2010 statistics)
  • Only about 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by age 22
  • Children born to parents without a high school diploma experience the highest risk of growing up in poverty
  • Michigan ranked 33 for the highest teen birth rates in the country
  • In 2007, Kids Count found that DETROIT had the highest level (32%) among the 50 largest U.S. cities for persons age 18 to 24 who: (1) are not presently enrolled in school; (2) are not currently working; and (3) have no degree beyond a high school diploma or GED
  • Significant increases of HIV infection among 13 to 19 year old males have been noted, among those 85% are African American
